ARC Linkage project:
Development of integrated biological markers of brain function
Biological markers are important tools for identifying predisposing factors to disease. They can be used for diagnosis, treatment evaluation & monitoring of disease progression.
Understanding normal variation is the key to developing biological markers as a screen for disorders of brain function. The combination of neuroimaging & genetic data is required to accurately predict this variation in complex functions.
This project has produced some of the early evidence to show that genetic variation may not have a direct effect on the behaviors that define mental illness. Rather, genetic variants may impact brain function, and the consequent alterations in the brain produce the symptoms we define as mental illness.
